aangika is an initiative started to physically empower dancers to bring out the best in their creative endeavours.

My name is Arpitha Shastry, qualified physiotherapist, clinical pilates practitioner and Bharatanatyam dancer with 20 years of Bharatanatyam experience. Through the combination of my training and skills I hope to educate dancers about their bodies, help them improve their technique, rehabilitate their injuries and prevent new injuries. I have a vested interest in Indian Classical Dances including Bharatanatyam, Kathak and Odissi, as well as Western styles such as Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Contemporary and Hip-hop.

In Indian Classical Dance, there hasn't been much inclusion of dance conditioning (in a way other than dance practice) to improve performance. Nor has there been any mention of injury prevention.

Recently, I’ve been really happy and excited to see that more Indian Classical Dancers have started cross training or dance specific strength and conditioning classes. This is great news and I think its now my turn to give back to dance and the dance community.

Aangika has been a thought process and brain child of mine for many years now. I hope it helps dancers of all descriptions and styles to get to know their bodies, and give them tools to help enhance their dance practice and performance.

Many thanks to my Guru Smt. Meena Elankumaran, my family, my Nadanalaya family and the various mentors throughout my life for always supporting and encouraging me.
